Horse:
Wonderland Farm starts unbroken horses under saddle as well as retraining horses that were started incorrectly or have behavior problems.

Karen’s background in breaking, training, and starting young horses includes over fifteen years of experience. Throughout the year she breaks and trains numerous horses and ponies of her own as well as horses belonging to clients. With consistency and patience, she has been able to restart several problem horses that their owners had given up on because of behavioral problems. Her pet project is retraining off the track thoroughbreds and giving them a successful new career as hunters.

One of Karen’s specialties is starting young horses. At the same time she was pursuing her degree in Equine Studies from Virginia Intermont College, she was already putting her skills to work in the ‘real world’, at Mapleside Farm in Pennsylvania. She was solely responsible for starting the many unbroke two year old thoroughbreds and warmbloods on the farm, as well as advancing the training on the older green broke horses. In the ensuing years, Karen has compiled a long list of successes.

Please give her a call to see how she can put her experience and talents to work for you.

Horse and Rider:
We work with students that own their horse. We help rider and horse develop a relationship of trust confidence and mutual respect.

Sometimes problems arise that require going back to basics. Riders often lack good basics of seat and lower leg. Horses may have missed steps, or been brought along too quickly in their training to develop proper balance and rhythm.
Katherine, a well schooled rider, brought her five year old thoroughbred mare, FiFi to us with behavioral problems. FiFi ignored her riders aids, often planting herself, refusing to go forward and bucking in response to her riders applied leg. Occasionally she would take hold of the bit and bolt. Her rider had started to become afraid of her. Karen took both Fifi and Katherine back to the basics, to regain trust and confidence in each other. They went back to walk/trot work to teach Fifi to carry herself in a balanced, relaxed frame moving forward from her riders aids. Today Katherine is taking Fifi through jump courses without evidence of the previous behavior.
